How to use
Count business days tells you how many working days fall between two dates — useful for estimating delivery windows or payment terms when dealing with Japanese companies. By default the start date itself is counted; tick "Don't count the start date" if the clock starts the following day.
Date after N business days converts phrases like "ships within 5 business days" into an actual calendar date, taking Japanese public holidays into account.
How holidays are determined
Japanese public holidays are computed from the rules of the Public Holiday Law right inside this page: fixed-date holidays, the "Happy Monday" holidays, the astronomical approximation for the spring and autumn equinox holidays, substitute holidays when a holiday falls on Sunday, and the "citizens' holiday" sandwiched between two holidays. Because everything is derived from the rules, no yearly data update is required. The one-off holidays of 2019 (imperial succession) and the moved holidays of 2020–2021 (Tokyo Olympics) are also handled.
Notes
- Company-specific closures (summer break, founding anniversaries) are not included.
- The New Year period (Dec 29 – Jan 3) is not a legal holiday in Japan, but most offices close — enable the option when that matters. Government offices are closed during this period.
- Equinox days are officially fixed in February of the preceding year; this tool uses the standard astronomical approximation (considered valid through 2099), which matches the official dates for the past decades.
